Currently valued at close to £4 billion the UK gaming sector is predicted to grow to over £10 billion in the next three years and bringing with it huge economic opportunities, according to an upcoming report.
The UK is well known for always being competitive at developing technology – as well as housing some of the best gaming talent in the world ranging from innovative indie developers to renowned studios like Rare, Codemasters, Rockstar North, Criterion, and Creative Assembly.
The pandemic has had devastating social and economic impacts around the globe – leaving a trail of unemployment in its wake, and resulting in several game studios being forced to delay releases as they shift their employees to remote working. But, the gaming industry has managed not only to adapt and avoid the worst of the devastating consequences effecting other industries, they have in fact continued to grow at an impressive rate.
The UK’s gaming sector is booming.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, the gaming sector made more money than video, music, and film with purchases surging by 218% at the beginning of the lockdown due to the increase in people looking for ways to virtually escape their four walls.
In a world where blockbuster premiers, international sporting events, and even going down the pub have been out of the question – gaming has broadened its appeal and infiltrated the daily lives of multiple generations as a safe lockdown past-time.
Of course, with the addition of PC gaming, mobile apps, and even streaming – accessibility is at an all-time high compared to the days when you needed a dedicated console in the living room. This has led to a substantial rise in new users – especially notable with the over 60s market looking to bridge the social limitations placed on them – keeping their brains in shape and finding new ways to enjoy quality time with their grandchildren.
Already this year, we have seen an increase of 20% in vacancies within the industry this year despite the pandemic, and with around 27,000 people currently employed in the UK gaming sector, it is expected to triple within five years.
